? Meet some clients who don’t really know a thing but think they know it all?
? Have some colleagues who believe they are way smarter than they actually are?
I’m sure all of us have experienced this, not once but many times.
While there are many causes of why people judge themselves better than the other, I’ll find this psychological reason interesting – the “Dunning–Kruger effect”.
It explains when people are inept or unskilled, they have illusory superiority and mistakenly assess their cognitive ability as greater than it is. Because of their limited knowledge, they often get caught in a bubble of inaccurate self-perception.
But when they gain more experience or expertise, they have less confidence in their abilities. They know enough to realize that things are much more complicated than they first thought.
How can you avoid the Dunning–Kruger effect and find out how good you actually are at something?
? First, ask other experts for feedback and consider it, even if it’s hard to hear.
? Second, and more important, KEEP LEARNING. The more knowledgeable we become, the less likely we are to have invisible holes in our competence.
